Somewhere between your first hires and your Series B, a bookkeeper and a year-end accountant stop being enough. Investors want a forecast. The bank wants covenants. The board wants a pack. And the founder is doing it all in a spreadsheet at midnight. A full-time CFO is the obvious answer, except it costs more than the problem does.

  • A full-time CFO in Canada costs $250,000 or more once benefits and equity are included
  • Most companies under $20M in revenue need a CFO for four to eight days a month, not twenty-two
  • Fundraising, an audit, or a lender review is when the missing finance leadership becomes visible
  • Regulated businesses (MSBs, fintechs, crypto) also need finance that speaks the bank and regulator language

finance function build-out with a fractional controller

Strategy is worthless if the close is late. When the books need work first, Lyndon runs month-end, reporting, and controls as your fractional controller so the CFO layer sits on reliable numbers.

finance that understands regulated businesses

MSBs, fintechs, and crypto companies need a CFO who knows what the bank and FINTRAC will ask for. We pair the finance seat with a named compliance officer when you need both.

Most companies that ask for a CFO need a controller first, and the honest answer is sometimes both. Here is how we draw the line.

Luke ThibodeauCPA · CFA · CAMSFounder and CEO

Luke is a finance and compliance operator who works hands-on with bitcoin-native companies, fintechs, and MSBs as a fractional CFO and CCO through Rockwell Advisory Group. As former CFO & CCO of Bitcoin Well (TSXV:BTCW), he built and ran the finance, compliance, and governance functions across a publicly listed, multi-entity crypto company from the ground up.

Today he brings that same operational depth to clients navigating treasury management, FINTRAC compliance, financial reporting, and corporate governance. Whether it's standing up a compliance program for a new MSB, managing multi-entity consolidations, or advising on AI strategy through Rockwell AI, Luke operates as an embedded member of the team rather than an outside advisor. He also founded Comply+, a RegTech platform automating FINTRAC reporting for Canadian MSBs, born directly from the pain points he encountered building compliance workflows by hand.

questionswegetasked.

What does a fractional CFO cost in Canada?

Most engagements run as a fixed monthly retainer scoped to a set number of days per month, and land well below the fully loaded cost of a full-time CFO (typically $250,000 or more with benefits and equity). We quote after a short scoping call so the retainer matches the actual work rather than a generic tier.

How is a fractional CFO different from a fractional controller?

A controller makes sure the numbers are right and on time. A CFO uses those numbers to decide where the business goes. Many companies need the controller first; if your close is late or your statements are unreliable, start there. We offer both and will tell you which one you actually need.

Do you work with companies outside Alberta and British Columbia?

Yes. The team is based in Edmonton and Kelowna and works with clients across Canada and internationally. Engagements are remote-first with on-site time where it is useful, for example board meetings, audits, or a fundraising process.

Do you replace my bookkeeper or accountant?

No. We sit above them. Your bookkeeper keeps recording transactions and your accounting firm keeps doing tax and year-end. A fractional CFO adds the forecasting, reporting, and decision layer that neither of those roles is built to provide.

Do you work with bitcoin, crypto, and fintech companies?

That is where the practice started. Luke was CFO and CCO of Bitcoin Well (TSXV:BTCW), a publicly listed multi-entity crypto company, and the team has run finance for MSBs, exchanges, and payment companies. We are comfortable with crypto accounting treatment, custody, and the compliance questions that come with regulated businesses.

How quickly can a fractional CFO start?

Usually within two weeks. The first month is diagnostic: we review the books, the systems, the cash position, and the reporting cadence, then agree a 90-day plan with you before settling into the monthly rhythm.
