Read Robert Half's controller salary data

This article reflects Rockwell's views, based on Robert Half Canada's 2027 Salary Guide and CFIB survey data. It is for general information only and is not financial, legal, investment, tax, or accounting advice.

If you're pricing a controller in Canada, start with the salary. Robert Half's 2027 Salary Guide puts a controller at about $120K to $175K a year nationally, with a midpoint near $147K. In Edmonton the range is about $125K to $180K.

Wage costs are already a pressure for Alberta owners. In CFIB's September survey of Alberta small businesses, 60% said wage costs were causing them difficulty, and half named a shortage of skilled labour as their leading growth constraint.

Rockwell's view: most growing companies need a controller for four to ten days a month. A fractional controller gives you that seat on a fixed monthly retainer, for a fraction of a $120K+ controller hire.

what a full-time controller costs in canada

Robert Half publishes a controller salary range by city. The low end is for someone new to the role and the high end is for extensive experience.

  • Canada: about $120K to $175K
  • Edmonton: about $125K to $180K
  • Calgary: about $130K to $185K
  • Vancouver: about $130K to $190K

Those are salaries. Rockwell's fractional controller page puts a full-time controller in Canada at $120,000 or more once benefits are included.

what you get for that salary

Robert Half describes the controller's job as overseeing the general ledger and a timely close, preparing financial statements under ASPE or IFRS, leading the accounting team, and keeping internal controls, policies and procedures in place.

A fractional controller runs that function part time. You get a senior accountant, usually a CPA, who owns your month-end close, financial statements, controls and systems, and manages your bookkeeper, for the days per month you need.

what a fractional controller costs

Rockwell prices the controller seat as a fixed monthly retainer, scoped to the size and complexity of your close. It typically costs a fraction of a full-time controller. You get a quote after a short review of your books and systems, so the retainer reflects the actual work.

Here is what can sit inside that scope, taken from the controller page:

  • Month-end close on a calendar. A written checklist with owners and deadlines, covering reconciliations, accruals, revenue recognition, intercompany and review, closed within ten business days.
  • Monthly statements. Income statement, balance sheet and cash flow, with variance commentary against budget, formatted for the board, the bank and the auditor.
  • Audit, review and lender readiness. Working papers, support schedules and a PBC list ready before the auditor asks.
  • Controls and systems. Approval workflows, segregation of duties, expense and AP controls, a clean chart of accounts, and QuickBooks Online, Xero or NetSuite set up to produce the reports you need.
  • More than one entity. Intercompany, consolidation, foreign currency and group reporting.
  • Regulated-business reporting. MSBs, fintechs and crypto companies need financials that satisfy a bank and FINTRAC as well as the CRA, with a named compliance officer alongside when you need one.

signs you need a controller now

Check your own finance function against this list:

  • The close takes weeks.A controller's close runs on a written calendar, within ten business days.
  • Reports are late or wrong. Your bookkeeper is good, and the reports are still unreliable.
  • The balance sheet has reconciling items nobody can explain.
  • An audit, review or bank covenant is coming. These are usually what exposes the gap.
  • Someone outside is about to read your statements. Late or unreliable statements are the first thing a lender, investor or acquirer notices.

controller, bookkeeper or cfo

A bookkeeper records transactions. Your accounting firm does tax and year-end. A controller makes sure the financial statements are accurate, complete and on time, and builds the controls that keep them that way.

A CFO uses those numbers to decide where the business goes: forecasting, board reporting, fundraising and treasury. The controller page lists the CFO seat for companies raising money, scaling past $2M in revenue, adding a board or considering an exit, at a fraction of a $250K+ CFO hire. If your close is late or your statements are unreliable, start with the controller. Our earlier post on Canada's controller shortage covers the comparison in more depth.

when you should not hire us

  • Your close is on time and your statements hold up. If what you need is a forecast, a board pack or a raise, look at fractional CFO support instead.
  • You need transactions recorded. That is a bookkeeper's job, and a controller manages that work.
  • You need your annual return filed. Your accounting firm keeps doing tax and year-end.

how Rockwell helps

Rockwell's finance team is based in Edmonton and Kelowna and works with clients across Canada, remote-first and inside your accounting system. The controller engagement is run day to day by Lyndon Weber, a CPA who was Corporate Controller at Próspera and Director of Finance at Bitcoin Well (TSXV:BTCW), with public practice roots at MNP. Luke Thibodeau (CPA, CFA, CAMS), former CFO and CCO of Bitcoin Well, provides oversight and the CFO layer when you need it.

The first month is a clean-up and diagnostic: reconciliations caught up, chart of accounts fixed, close checklist written. Most clients are on a ten-business-day close by the third month.
